Charles LeRoy Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis P. Smith (????) E. Main St., Saranac, will be held Sunday May 9th, at 2:30 p.m. at the home of his parents. Burial will be in Saranac cemetery. Grand River Valley Post N (????) Veterans of Foreign Wars Saranac will have charge of the services. Pfc. Smith was born October 25th, 1923 in Berlin Twp. and was graduated in 1941 from Saranac High School. He was employed by the Kroger Grocery and Baking Co. in Saranac. Pfc. Smith and his step brother Robert enlisted together (????) Paratroopers Dec 3, 1942. Received their training at (????) Georgia their paratroopers (????) received at Fort Benning, Georgia January 1st 1944 he was sent to England. He was a machine gunner with the 101 Airborne Command and was killed on D Day June 6th 1944 in the invasion of Normandy. Surviving are his parents (????) sister, Mrs. Joyce Sterzick of Potters Corners, step-sister, Rhoda Ann of St. Lawrence school of nursing, Lansing, step brother Robert L. of Ionia, nephew Charles Otis Sterzick and niece Sandra Jean Sterzick.
