Sentinel-Std. - Thursday, Nov. 17, 1983

PORTLAND- Sergeant Daniel O. Smith, 40, of 5745 S. M. 52, Owosso, former 
Portland resident, died Wednesday in Owosso.

He was born Nov. 1, 1943, the son of Isadore and Elenora Pung Smith of Portland. 
He was sergeant with the Michigan State Police for 16 years.

He was a 1962 graduate of St. Patrick's High School and served four years in the 
US Air Force in the military police. He entered the State Police recruit school 
and graduated in 1967.

He was assigned to Alpena and Flat Rock and was promoted to uniform sergeant and 
transferred to Erie, Mich. He spent the last six years at the Owosso post. 

He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church of Owosso.

He is survived by his parent, one sister, Kathleen Smith of Portland, four 
brothers, Donald of Laingsburg, Ronald of Portland, Thomas of Grand Ledge, and 
twin Donald of Lyons, 12 nieces and nephews, several aunts, uncles and cousins. 

Funeral services will be held Saturday at11 a.m. from St. Patrick's Catholic 
Church in Portland with the Rev. Father Martin Kuryclowicz, officiating.

Rosary service will be held today at 8 p.m. and scripture service will be held 
Friday at 8 p.m. from the Neller funeral Home in Portland.

Burial will be in Portland Cemetery, Michigan State Police will provide 
pallbearers.
