Smith died from gunshot wounds on Wednesday morning during a robbery at the Flint motel. Born in Hubbardston, he attended school in that area and graduated from Maple Rapids in 1944. He delivered mail in Ionia 19 years before transferring to the Flint post office one year ago. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Belva Smith of Flint, his father, Harold Smith of Hubbardston, a brother David of Sand Lake, and his grandmother, Mrs. Bertha Lockwood of Ionia. Smith was a veteran of World War II, and attained the rank of sergeant before discharge in August of 1948.
