Smith, 64, for 35 years principal of Ionia high school and vice- president of the Ionia County National Bank Ionia, died in the Ionia County Memorial hospital Monday morning about 9 a.m. He had been ill since before his retirement in April 1956 and for the past week had been critically ill. He had undergone emergency surgery more than a week ago in an effort to save his life. Principal Smith came to Ionia in 1919 from River Rouge high school where he was principal after serving in the United States in World War I. He was a native of Marquette where he attended the Marquette schools, being graduated in 1911. He entered the University of Michigan and received his bachelor of arts degree there in 1916, later earning his masters degree from the university. He also had work at Michigan State University and Harvard. In 1919 after his Army service he was named Ionia high school principal, a post he retained until last April when failing health forced his retirement. Mr and Mrs Smith were married in Ionia, December 10, 1920. During his many years as a leader of youth in Ionia, Mr Smith became a personal friend of thousands of Ionia youngsters who carried that friendship through the years. Last fall during the Ionia-Hastings football game the Ionia high school alumni association honored Mr Smith at a between-halves ceremony during which he was presented with a framed citation and an engraved gold wrist watch. During his early years as principal Mr Smith acted as coach and athletic adviser until full time coaching staffs were appointed. For many years he was the athletic department manager in charge of game scheduling and business direction which included preparing the school and its facilities for contests. He was identified with many athletic conferences and leagues of which Ionia high school was a member and served those league groups as president and in other official capacities. He belonged to many civic groups in the Ionia area. As a director of the Ionia county National Bank he served many years as its vice-president. He has been associated with the Ionia Elks, the Country club and the Ionia Masons. He had served as an officer in the Michigan Secondary School associations and attended regularly meetings of principals of high schools with in the state. He was past commander of the Ionia American Legion post and was active in affairs of the Episcopalian church of which he was a senior warden for 25 years and had been treasurer and senior lay reader. For many years Mr Smith had been manager of the Ionia Free Fair's grandstand and was in charge of all ticket takers during the annual exposition. Surviving are his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Mrs. John Mowatt of Harter street, Ionia and Mrs. Percy Guest of Birmingham, and five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made but services are expected to be conducted from the Episcopal church Thursday morning.
