October 3, 2020 Lorena Smith Lorena Smith, age 85, of Nashville passed away Sunday, Sept. 27th, 2020 at Spectrum Pennock Hospital in Hastings. Lorena was born in Portland, on March 11, 1935, the daughter of the late Fred and Lily (Huen) Fernholz. She was raised in Portland and attended local schools graduating from St. Patrick Catholic School in 1954. On May 12, 1956 she married Henry Fedewa at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Portland. The couple relocated to the Nashville area, where they built their home and raised their two daughters, Debbie and Sharon. Together the couple owned and operated the Sinclair Service Station on main Street in Nashville. Lorena took great pride in the care of her family and tending to their needs. Lorena was an avid and accomplished bowler, as skill she developed while the couple owned and operated the bowling alley in Portland. At their wedding the owners of the Brunswick Corporation presented the couple with their own bowling balls and bowling shoes. They owned and operated both the service station and bowling alley, until Henry passed away in 1968. Lorena was employed at Aluminum Extrusions in Charlotte, until it was closed. She continued her working career at Linn Products until retiring in 1999. Shortly after retiring, she married Leland Smith. The couple shared time between the both of their homes in Charlotte and Nashville until Leland passed away in 2007 after 13 years of marriage. Lorena was always very active. She took great pride in caring for her home working on her garden and routinely walking daily. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lorena never gave up the opportunity to spend time with her family and making cherished memories Lorena enjoyed traveling to Florida to escape the cold weather to visit her daughter and family. Lorena is survived by her two daughters, Debra (Jan) Benedict, Sharon (Steven) Elzinga; three sisters, Rosie Hall, Germaine Thompson, Dorothy (Roger) Waltz; her brother, Larry (Sue) Fernholz; sisters-in-law, Gladys and Anita Fernholz; six granddaughters; five great-granddaughters and two great- grandsons with one "on the way". She was preceded in death by her husbands, Henry and Leland; brothers, Jerry and Robert Fernholz. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Friday, Oct. 2, 2020, with Father Stephen Phillip officiating. Interment took place privately. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to ___________. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Daniels funeral Home in Nashville.
