          LAST RITES FOR RAYMOND SMITH
   Raymond C. Smith 75, passed away suddenly at his home Tuesday morning.
   He was born in Woodbury March 28, 1895, son of J. George and Louise (Reiser)
Smith and was a lifelong 
resident of the Lakewood area.
   A 1913 graduate of Hastings High School, he graduated in 1917 from Michigan State
University in civil 
engineering.
   Mr. Smith married Ella Schnelder of Saranac June 11. 1921, and they resided here.
 She passed away May 
23, 1952. He married Mrs. Lucy Stockford, March 24, 1958, who survives.
   A member of the Congregational Church, he served as church treasurer for 21
consecutive years, served on 
the Board of Education of the Lake Odessa School for many years and in Many other
civic offices.
   Co-owner of Smith Bros. elevator, he later was employed in the office of the Lake
Odessa Canning Co. until 
his retirement because of his health.
   Mr. Smith was a member of Lake Odessa F&AM Lodge, Chapter of the Order of Easter
Star, life member of 
the Scottish Rites and Saladin Shrine and charter member of the Lake Odessa Lions
Club.  A veteran of World 
War I, he was a member of LaVerne Demaray Post, American Legion.
   Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Raymond Jr. of Fremont and Dr. C. Bruce
of Northville; a 
stepdaughter, Mrs. Ronald (Uyrdas) McLeod of Lake Odessa; five grandchildren and two
step-grandchldren.
   Funeral services were held at 3"30 Thursday (today) at the Pickens Funeral
Chapel.  Rev. Gary Lyons 
officiated, with burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
