Rites Held For Vern D. Smith

Vern D. Smith, 50, of route 4, Ionia, passed away suddenly Saturday morning. He 
was stricken while at work at the Oldsmobile plant and was pronounced dead on 
arrival at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing. He was the son of Chester and Lena 
(Lambert) Smith and was born at Clarksville but had spent most of his life in 
the Lake Odessa area, and attended the local schools.

He moved to his home on Peck Lake Rd. south of Ionia 8 years ago and had been 
employed at the A.O. Smith Co. at Ionia for 17 years and had been employed by 
Oldsmobile in Lansing for the last year and a half. 

Surviving are his wife, Mary E.; two daughters, Mrs. Warren (Linda) Guilford of 
Mulliken and Teresa at home; two sons, Duane of Lake Odessa and Brian at home, 
and a sister, Mrs. Clifton (Marian) Wellman of Hastings; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 2:00 at the Pickens Funeral Chapel. 
Rev. Marvin Zimmerman officiated with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens in 
Ionia.
