S. M. Smith a widely known Elder in the Church o the Brethren, passed away at his home in Campbell township last week Thursday. Four years ago he underwent a very serious surgical operation from which he never fully recovered. His health rapidly declined during the past few months, until his Heaveny Father said, "It is enough, come up higher." Funeral services were held at the Dunkard church Sunday and a large audience paid their last tributes of respect to him. The services were conducted by Rev. E. F. Caslow of Grand Rapids, assisted by Rev P. B. Messner and Rev. Chas. Deardorff. He was borne to his resting place by six ministers. Interment was in Clarksville cemetery. ---------- IN MEMORIAM Samuel M. Smith was born in Dark county, Ohio, Aug 21, 1848, and departed this life June 3, 1920 aged 71 yr., 9 mo., 12 da. In the fall of 1872, he came to Michigan and located in Woodland where he resided for about seven years. He then came to Campbell township and located on the farm just east of the Dunkard church, where he resided till the time of his death. On Dec. 28, 1879 he was united in marriage to Catherine Flory of Ohio. Two children were born to this union, Ira J. and Susie F., the latter preceding her father 24 years ago. His wife departed this life in the spring of 1883, when the son and daughter were small. In the fall of 1884 he married Lydia Long, who has been his constant loving companion through the remainder of his life. Two daughters were born to this union, Ruby L., now Mrs. Clyde VanHouten of Edmore, and S. Ruth, now Mrs. Earl Hoover of Detroit. He was widely known as a Minister in the Church of the Brethren, having served in that capacity for 37 years, and has given words of encouragement to many people in his vicinity. He was respected as a man of integrity, honesty, and wisdom and will be greatly missed by all who were intimately associated with him.
