Smith, wife of David Smith, of the elevator firm of Smith Bros & Velte, well known in the village and surrounding country. Mrs. Smith had been in excellent health all winter until a short time ago, she complained to quite severe headache and about two weeks ago a physician was called, but she grew rapidly ____ and passed life and state of unconsciousness about eight o'clock Sunday morning, which lasted until ten o'clock in the evening when she passed away. All that tender devotion and loving hands could do could not check the ravages of the dread disease, typhoid pneumonia. A trained nurse from Grand Rapids was secured but all to no avail. The Master spoke and she heard His voice saying,"Well done good and faithful servant, enter into the joys of thy Lord." Mrs. Smith was born in Woodland township, February 14, 1863, and lived in the immediate vicinity until she finished her education in the country school after which she taught school for a year, but being desirous of a better education to better fit her self for her chosen professions he entered the Hastings high school and graduated with the class of 1886, being accorded by her classmates one of the highest honors of the class. After her graduation she taught school in the schools around the country and her success is better told by her former pupils, who always speak of her in most devoted terms, no matter under what circumstances, she always had a kind word and a hearty hand shake for them all, and each day there was unfolded to their vision the generous and beautiful examples of their instructor, which will be cherished in their memories forever. On December 25th, 1890 she was united in marriage to David Smith of Woodbury, and went to housekeeping on a farm one mile east of Woodbury, living there about a year, when they moved to that village, which was their home until moving to Lake Odessa a little over a year ago, where Mr. Smith became the senior member of the elevator firm of Smith Bros. & Velte. Mrs.Smith was the daughter of John and Katherine Meyers, of Woodland township, both of whom have passed away, her father being killed in the civil war. The deceased was converted early in life and became an active member of the class of the Of Myers Church which later built a new church, at Woodbury, where she still retained her membership. For a number of years she was Sunday school superintendent and was almost always in active work and in positions of respon- sibility, being also resident of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society. Her special-delight was Sunday school work and she has served at various times in the compacity of Secretary of Township and county Sunday school Associations. Since coming to Lake Odessa she has been an active worker in the Methodist church, the Young Peoples Bible class being her special charge. She was a member of the W.C.T.U. and Superintendent of the Loyal Temperance Legion, the latter attending the funeral in a body. She has gone from among us, but we are thankful she has lived. To her home she has been, and will ever be, a benediction and a blessed memory to her friends in this village, and to those in her old home, whose hearts are heavy with sorrow, she had been a source of joy and happy companionship, and by her going away she has called their attention to the fact that there is anther life into whose gates she has now entered, and whither we are all tending and the most important thing in this life, is to make it a preparation for that. We need not say anything about the beautiful life she has lived among us, it is open to you all. Her pleasant smile was for everybody; her devotion to her home; her womanly qualities that made her a counselor and help to everyone, and her faith in her Heavenly Father, have helped to make her a model of true Christian womanhood. Beautiful indeed was the tribute paid the life of this esteemed friend and neighbor in the wealth of floral offerings which voice more eloquently than words the universal sorrow felt at her loss. The funeral was held from the new Methodist church, Wednesday at 2 p.m., Rev. O. Lash of Woodbury assisted by Rev. J. H Wilcox, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in Lakeside Cemetery. Besides the grief stricken husband, who has the deepest sympathy of all. She leaves a host of relatives and friends to mourn the loss of a true Christian friend and neighbor.
