Mrs. Mary Ann Smith was born in Wayne county, Michigan, in 1839 and moved into Kent county in 1843. She again moved, to Keene, Ionia county, on July 2nd, 1858, and was married on July 30 of the same year and there remained for 29 years. On Dec. 7, 1887 they moved to Lake Odessa, and has lived here ever since. About one year ago she subjected herself to a delicate surgical operation at which time she was very near the gates of death. She slowly recovered, but since that time has been in very poor health, and her strength gradually failed and more rapidly since March of this year. During the last few weeks of her illness she felt that life's end was nearing, and no doubt summoned her faith in God to prepare and await it as she said: I am ready to go where He calls me." When the summons came she died as peacefully as one falling into a slumber, on Sunday evening May 28. The funeral was held from the Congregational church on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. Skentlebury preaching the sermon, and the remains laid to rest in Lakeside cemetery." Per LAKE ODESSA WAVE, Friday, June 16, 1899, page 5: "We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many friends who kindly assisted us in the sickness and burial of our dear wife and mother and also for the flowers furnished. Edgar Smith and Family." (Per LAKE ODESSA WAVE, Michigan, Friday, June 2, 1899, page 8: "Obituary. Mrs. Mary Ann Smith was born in Wayne county, Michigan, in 1839 and moved into Kent county in 1843.
