SMITH, WAYNE CARTER:
   SENTINEL-STANDARD, Ionia, MI, 1-29-1997:  "IONIA - Wayne C. Smith, 81, of
Easton Township died early Monday, Jan. 27, 1997 at Gratiot Community Hospital
in Alma.
   He was born Nov. 2, 1915 in Easton Township, the son of Verne and Lillian
(Zimmerman) Smith and spent most of his life at the family home with the
exception of time spent in Muskegon.  He was educated in Ionia Schools and was
married on April 22, 1939 in Belding to the former Isabelle Treynor.
   He was employed for 37 years at the Ionia County Road Commission as a truck
driver, retiring in 1980.  He was an avid woodworker and sports fan.
   He is survived by one daughter, Caroline L. (John) McKinnon of Greenville;
four grandchildren, Carrie (Richard) Rasmussen, Michael McKinnon, Jenny McKinnon
and David McKinnon, all of Greenville; two great grandchildren, Cassandra and
Joshua Rasmussen of Greenville; one sister, Maxine (Hersel) Lake of Lake City;
two sisters-in-law, Emaline Smith of Belding and Eleanor Smith of Tenn.; and
nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Isabelle, on Oct. 22,
1984; two sons, Dale in 1986 and Harry Smith in 1988; three brothers, Gerald,
Alden and Asaph Smith.
   Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Cook Funeral Home in
Ionia with Rev. Kendall Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. 
Interment will be in Easton Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Wednesday at the
Rich St. Chapel from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma
with envelopes available at the Cook Funeral Home."
