He, with another youth, Richard Pearson, was hunting on the Royal Johnson farm a mile west of Odessa Center school house. Stopping to rest on an old stone wall, Eugene attempted to place his gun beside him. In doing so the gun was accidentally discharged, the full force of the 12- gauge fire-arm striking him in the head, killing him instantly. Eugene was a Junior in high school and a member of the football team. He is the second son of the Smiths to suffer a tragic death. An older brother, Erwin, received fatal injuries also at the age of 16, in an automobile accident ten years ago while returning from a football game with his team. Surviving are the parents and a sister Mrs.Ruth Gilliland, and two nieces of Lansing. The body will lie in state at the Wortley and Baine Chapel until Friday morning when it will be taken to the home. Funeral services will be held in the home, two mile north and a half mile west, of town Friday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. Donald Holbrook officiating. Burial will be at Lakeside.
