"Jesus Calling" was a book that she read each morning with her coffee and chocolate chip cookie (or cookies) in hand. To us she was known as Bert, Mom, Ma, Grandma, Gram, GG, Sis and Aunt B, but to her Savior, She was known as Child of God. Bertha was born onJuly 17, 1930 to Iril and Matilda Shilton on the family farm. She was preceded in death by her husband John; brothers, Marvin and Henry and grandson, Gilbert Scott "Scotty" Orta. She is survived by her brother, Royal(Teri) Shilton; sister-in-law, Joyce (Marvin) Smith; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great- grandchildren. She married John Smith on March 6, 1950. They had four children, Dale (Martha) Smith, Kendall (Tammy) Smith, Karen (Gilbert) Orta, Jeffery (Carolyn) Smith. John and Bertha raised their children on the family farm where she lived until her passing. Along with working on the farm, she also worked as a telephone operator in Sunfield for many years. Cookies and doughnut holes were her trade mark. In her younger years, she baked and fed the neighborhood kids, calling them her cookie monsters. She was always a great cook and fed many. John and Bertha were faithful members of the Sebewa Center United Methodist Church, where Bertha continued to attend until it closed. For many years,John and Bertha would travel to Florida in the winter, but always enjoyed coming home to family and friends. John and Bertha were united as one and many times after his passing she would say she wanted to go be with him. She is with him now with chocolate chip cookies in hand. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten. When you see a cookie or a doughnut hole remember her, and hold the memories you have of her in your heart. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society. Celebration of Life 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021 at the Sunfield United Brethren Church.
