John George Smith was born November 11th, 1825, in Wurtenberg, Germany In 1852 he came to America and the first few years he spent mostly at Bellview, Mich. In 1855 he was united in marriage to Barbara Homes in Woodland,Mich., and then settled on his farm near Woodbury Eaton county. This union was blessed with three sons and four daughters. His wife, one son and one daughter, three brothers and two sisters have preceded him in death, his wife dying six years ago last July. In 1860 he was converted under the labors of Rev.M.Kruger, and became one of the charter members of Woodland Evangelical Society in the same year. Mrs.Barbara Eckardt being now the only remaining charter member. He very acceptably filled official positions in the church's Sunday school superintendent and as class leader.He delighted in the Lords work, and remained faithful to God and to his church. The last few years of his life he occasionally suffered. This being due to old age. A few weeks before his death he was taken sick, and the last few days he suffered great pain but he never murmured, but expressed a wish to go home. The Lord came and received him Feb. 27, 1914, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 16 days. He leaves one sister, two sons, David of Lake Odessa and George of Woodbury, three daughters, Mrs.Fred Bowers,Mrs.Christiana Hildinger and Mrs.John Shelter, all near Woodbury eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives and friends. The Lord comfort the bereaved and grant them all a happy reunion in Heaven. The funeral service was held in the Evangelical church, Monday,March 1st at 11 a.m.. Rev.J.M. Stone of Woodbury spoke in the English language and Rev. W.F. Boettcher, the pastor in charge, in the German language. The music was furnished by Mr.and Mrs.Fred Eckardt, Mrs.Samuel Schuler and H.J.Garlinger with Miss Olga Eckardt organist. CARD OF THANKS We wis to express our sincere thanks to the neighbors and friends who so kindly assisted s during the illness and at the time of the death and burial of our father,John George Smith. We would also thank the singers for the beautiful songs.
