January 8, 2022 SMITH Roger E.Smith, age 72 of Ionia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 29, 2021. Roger was born on February, 16, 1949 in Ionia, the son of Roy and Virginia (Rittenberg) Smith. On August 30, 1969, he married the love of his life, Toni. Roger was a true individualist; he took the path less traveled. His choices were sometimes unconventional, but he could be depended on to accomplish any task. His success in life depended not on education and stud but on hard work and initiative. He was never averse to a calculated risk, and most of his risks were unqualified successes (the ones that were not, won't be mentioned here!) Roger could talk to anyone, and often did. He was known by many, and loved by more. His favorite people were his grandkids, followed by any kids. He was known to carry a few tootsie roll suckers in his pockets to give to any child he came across. His sisters and brothers played significant roles in his life, and he loved them dearly. When asked he would say his best friend in life was Mo (the black lab/stray he adopted as a a pup). Roger found the greatest comfort in life when in company of his children and wife, no matter where they were (Michigan, Connecticut, or South Dakota). Roger was beyond generous, and when he was able, he would help anyone who asked. He was a man who will never be duplicated, but can never be forgotten.Roger graduated from ionia High School with the class of 1967. He loved hunting and fishing, being outdoors and woodworking. He enjoyed working with his hands, and he built 3 houses for him and his family. He also loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Roger is survived by his wire, Toni of Ionia; daughter, Renee (Jason) Grudzien of Louisiana; son Roman (Jody) Smith of St.Louis brother Randy (Sue) Smith of Ionia; sisters, Donna Yeoman of bath and Joyce (Ron) Spangler of Lake City and grandchildren, Remington, Ryder and Rylee. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert Smith and brother-in- law, Robert Yeoman. Roger didn't want a funeral. He requested an outdoor celebration and we plan to have it in the spring. When we can be reasonably sure of the wether, we will let you know.
