July 25, 2022 Excerpts from Portland Obituary DANNY "DAN" R. SMITH Died Thursday July 21, 2022-age 71 of Portland. Born March 28, 1951 in Portland, third of eleven children born to Marjorie & Joseph Smith. Attended school at St.Patrick Catholic School in Portland & Portland Public Schools. First married to Deborah (Almy) & had three daughters, Laura, Barb & Donna. Married the love of his life, Roxane (Vogel)& fathered two more daughters, Sarah & Shannon as well as raising their son, Scott. Retired from general Motors in 2001 after 32 years of service. He spent 15 years as a committee man of the local 602 representing his people in the workplace. Dan owned & operated with his wife & mother, Smitty's Canoe Livery in Portland. His favorite brand Canoe was the Kruger crafted Sea Wind. He sometime helped his friend Verlen Kruger build these vessels in Lansing, MI. One of his biggest Adventures was a three-month trip, "North to Alaska" to take on the mighty Yukon River. He paddles Michigan rivers, plus the Mississippi & ocean paddling. Dan took part in the Grand River Beautification, preserving as nature intended. He served as President of the Verlen Kruger Memorial Planning, raising enough money to erect a life sized bronze statue in honor of their friend & hero. Dan could "Breeze" in & be gone onto the next project. Known as "Dano" when entertaining with his magic tricks & an avid collector of yoyo's that he did tricks with. Preceded in death by his mother, father, and two son-in-laws, Brad Busch & Lyle "Burch" Chick, niece, Stacy Smith & his favorite dog, Daisy. Surviving him are his wife, Roxane; children Laura (Smith) & Jim Stiles, Barb Smith,Scott Smith, Donna (Smith) Busch, Sarah Smith, Shannon Smith (Ken Harrell); 10 grandchildren & 12 great-grandchildren. Also survived by siblings;Carol (Smith) & Terry Kellogg, Mike Smith,Judy (Smith) & Bill Reid, Rick Smith, Jerry Smith, Dennis & Ann Smith, Vicki Smith (Greg Swartner), Colleen (Smith) and Sam Yim, Steve & Linda Smith, Scott Smith, as well as numerous nieces & nephews. Viewing will be held at Lehman Funeral Home in Portland July 27, 2022 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral will be July 28, 2022 at 2:00 p.m with a luncheon to follow at the Kruger Memorial on Canal Street in Portland. Bring a chair to the lunch-in. Thee will be a Sea Wind tribute in Dan's Honor, if you have one, put in on top of your vehicle before coming to the funeral service.
