SMITH, ALDEN VERNE:
   SENTINEL-STANDARD, Ionia, MI, 1-8-1996:  "Obituary - IONIA - Alden Verne
Smith, 82, of Ionia died Friday, Jan. 5, 1996, at the Heartland Health Care
Center in Ionia.
   He was born April 30, 1913, in Ionia, the son of Verne C. and Lillian M.
(Zimmerman) Smith.  He grew up in Ionia and graduated from Ionia High School in
1933.  He was an acclaimed baseball pitcher in school and went on to pitch in
the minor leagues until an injury prevented him from continuing.  He served in
the U. S. Army as a Corporal during World War II.  He was employed as a tool
maker for Steelcase Manufacturing in Muskegon until his retirement, at which
time he returned to his home in Ionia.
   He is survived by his sister, Maxine (Hershel) Lake, of Lake City; brother
Wayne C. Smith, of Ionia; and several nieces and nephews.
   He was preceded in death by two brothers:  Asaph C. in 1987 and Gerald D. in
1988.
   At Mr. Smith's request, no funeral services will be conducted.  Interment
will take place at Easton Cemetery at a later date.
   Myers Memorial Chapel in Ionia is in charge of the arrangements."
