Ames was born in Scipio, New York, June 3, 1848, and died February 12, 1926 at Wayland, Michigan. Her early life and schooling was at the place of her birth. December 27, 1866 she was married to Ethan N. Smith and they immediately came to Leighton township, Allegan County where they settled and for about forty years resided on their farm, now occupied by a grandson Clayton Smith. For a year after her husband’s death, February 18, 1907, she remained on the farm, then for several years made her home with her daughter, Mrs. R. W. Goodemoot at Lake Odessa, coming and going among her children and grand children and helping people in need of help until August 1921 she went to live with her brother John Ames at Wayland, remaining there until her death. She was the daughter of Orin and Phila Ames and one of eleven children. Nine of whom made their home in the same vicinity. Aunt Vine or Grandma Smith as she was lovingly called made friends wherever she went, always considering the comfort and convenience of others even in her dying hours. She, with her husband, was converted in February 1880 and joined the Wayland Methodist church were she remained a faithful member the remainder of her life. She was faithful as a Sunday School teacher, president of Ladies Aid or in fact in any place where service called her. While in Lake Odessa she was a member of the Woman’s Relief Corps and made many friends in that village. She was a faithful member of the Grange more than fifty years and for many years an active member of the W.C.T.U. In these organizations she was frequently called upon to prepare papers on various subjects and late years she enjoyed writing of pioneer life. Her death was a triumphant one, she being ready and glad to enter into the “Rest that remaineth for the people of God.” She leaves a daughter, Mrs. L. Alberta Dann Goodemoot, Lake Odessa, a son Eleroy A. Smith, Wayland, a foster daughter, Mrs. Ena May Herrington, Grand Rapids, a brother, John A. Ames, Wayland, seven grandchildren and six great- grandchildren besides many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends to deeply mourn the loss of a mother and friend. She is the last of six—three sisters who married three brothers and settled on farms adjoining and whose bodies all sleep in the Wayland cemetery, all in death, as in life, near each other.
