Betty was born December 12, 1925 in Portland, the daughter of Herbert and Viola (Grey) Avery. She graduated from Sunfield High School in 1944. Betty was a faithful and active member of the Lakewood United Methodist Church, and served as church historian for several years. She had worked at the Piston Ring factory in Hastings, Lake Odessa Canning Company on the ketchup line, Tasker's Apple Orchard, the Lake Odessa Wave, and several elderly ladies for whom she did housekeeping. She was also a caregiver for her best friend, Victor Eckart, who passed away November 27, 2000. Betty was a very loving and caring person to all and will be remembered for the good deeds she has done. She enjoyed making her plastic canvas cross book markers and sending them all over the world; this was her own personal ministry to reach out to others about Christ. she loved her country, the beauty of nature, painting, writing her own poetry, and being creative with her hands. At Christmas time Betty loved to make varieties of cookies and candies to share wit neighbors, friends and shut-ins, She was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law, Ella Mae Avery; son-in-law, Gordon Oaks; grandson, Steven Oaks; and nephew, Bob Avery. Surviving are Betty's children, Gary (Terry) Smith of Lake Odessa, and Marilyn (Thomas) Nofke, of Lake Odessa; brothers, Darrell (Virginia)Avery of Coldwater, John (Marsha) Avery of Bloomington, IL, Ron (Laura) Avery of Hastings, and Don Avery of Fenton, MO; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many other loving relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2006 at the Lakewood United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorial contributions may be nade to Paws with a cause, or the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Koops Funeral Chapel, Lake Odessa.
