R. Smith Ionia business places were closed and Ionia industries briefly halted their activities Tuesday afternoon out of respect to the memory of Kimball R. Smith, Sr., whose funeral services were held at 3 o'clock from the East Washington street home where over half a century of his life had been spent. The funeral was one of the most largely attended ever held in Ionia, and there were present, besides the many friends from Ionia and vicinity, a considerable number from other parts of the state. Floral pieces in abundance both from Ionia and away filled the home. The Episcopalian service was conducted by Rev. F. Edward G. White, rector of St. Johns Episcopal church, and the singing was by Mrs. B. A. Colwell, Mrs. Thane Benedict, Thane Benedict and G. L Yates. Bearers were K. R. Smith, Jr. G. Morgan Smith, Delos G. Smith, Geer R. Smith, Hal H. Smith, L. W. Smith, Charles Smith and Fred A. Tower. Mrs. Harry Williams and Mrs. G. I. Yates were in charge of the flowers and were assisted by the employees of the Smith & Smith store. A large delegation from the Ionia Elks lodge attended the services and form an escort of honor as the funeral partly left the home for its trip to Highland Park cemetery. The escort marched with the cortege to Mill street. Among the many who came to Ionia from distant points to attend the services were former Sen. William Alden Smith and Sen. Arthur A. Vandenberg of Grand Rapids; Ex- congressman Joseph W. Fordney and M. N. Brady of Saginaw; Coleman Vaughn, of St. Johns; Benton Hanchett, W. Millard Palmer, Lawrence W. Smith and Ed Mangold of Grand Rapids; Hal N. Smith, Ray Barnes and Harry Kennedy of Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Smith, of Cadillac; Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Pontius, of Flint, and Mr. and Mrs. W. Y. Serrin, of Chicago. There were also many from other places in Ionia and neighboring counties.
