Phyllis E. Smith, age 86, of Ionia, Michigan, passed away on October 18, 2006. 
She was preceded in death by her husband Delbert, mother Josephine Rokas Smith 
Bergstrom, sister Dorothy Flees, brothers Ralph Smith and Robert Smith. 

Phyllis was born January 13, 1920, in Traverse City, where she lived most of 
her life. She was Executive Secretary for 27 years to the City Manager of 
Traverse City. Although knitting and doing crossword puzzles were two favorite 
pastimes, her passion was bowling. She was a Board member of the Traverse City 
WBA since 1964, serving as Secretary and then President and was inducted into 
the TCWBA Bowling Hall of Fame in 2001. As a member of the Michigan WBA Board 
of Directors, she received the honor of being inducted into the state Hall of 
Fame in 1988. “Phyl” became familiar to many members as the lady wearing the 
strange hats and portraying many rolls in skits at the Annual Officers 
Workshops in Clare. The MWBA also honored Phyllis by dedicating the 1994 State 
Bowling Tournament to her. 

Phyllis is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Letitia (Tish) and Ken 
Sweet, daughter Valery Whipkey, grandchildren Ken (Teresa) Sweet, Kim (Jim) 
Beattie, Kevin (Vicki) Sweet and Brian (Kelli) Corner and nine great-
grandchildren. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be 
greatly missed.

Per her wishes, cremation has taken place and the family will have a memorial 
service in the Spring. Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Memorial 
contributions may be made to Ionia Area Hospice or the Belding Library (books-
