Smith, who died at his farm near Maple corners early Sunday morning following an attack of pneumonia, were interred in Portland cemetery Tuesday afternoon with Masonic honors. Members of Portland lodge No. 31, F.&A.M. joined the funeral cortege upon its arrival in the village, and accompanied the remains to the cemetery. Clyde A. Moore, master of the lodge, delivered the impressive Masonic burial service at the grave, while the services at the late home were in charge of Rev. John H. Stewart, of the Baptist church. The obsequies were largely attended by friends and neighbors. Alvah G. Smith was born on a farm in Sunfield township March 14, 1862. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. At the age of two he moved with his parents to the farm near Maple Corners where his death occurred. From 1876 to 1878 he attended the Portland schools and in 1888 he entered the law department of the University of Michigan, from which he was graduated four years later. He was admitted to he bar during his junior year. In 1891 Mr. Smith opened a law office at Lake City, and in the fall of the following year was elected prosecuting attorney and circuit court commissioner of Missaukee county. He was also judge of probate in that county for a term of four years, and was a member of the state senate in 1899 and 1900. On May 21, 1881 Mr. Smith was married to Miss Ada M. Willett, of Leavenworth, Ks., and besides the widow three children, Edward O. Smith, of Milwaukee, Mrs. Sarah Price and James E. Smith, of Portland, survive. In 1901 Mr. Smith went west for his health, returning to his 175-acre farm near Maple corners seven years ago. He was apparently in robust health until the day he was stricken and his death was a keen shock to many acquaintances.
