The Lake Odessa Wave, December 22, 1944


David Smith, Sr., was born in Sunfield township August 20, 1858, and died at 
his home in Lake Odessa, December 18, 1944.  He was the second of a family of 
four daughters and three sons of John George Schmeidt and Barbara Haines 
Schmeidt, both of whom came to Michigan from Germany in their youth with 
several others who were looking for a new place to establish their homes.

As a young man Mr. Smith was a faithful attendant at the Evangelical church of 
which his parents were members.  On coming to Lake Odessa he became active in 
the local Methodist church and at the time of his death had been a faithful 
member for 39 years.

He had a character of sterling quality and loved his fellowmen, his home and 
his family.  He felt a great responsibility to his business, the community in 
which he lived, and his church.  He will long be remembered for his kindliness 
toward everyone.

Besides the immediate family, he leaves to mourn their loss, four nephews, 
three nieces, several cousins and a host of friends.

The funeral was held at the home with the Rev. Leon W. Manning, former pastor, 
assisted by the Rev. J. Lawrence Ward, officiating.  Selections from favorite 
hymns were played by Mrs. Carl Brodbeck.  Pall bearers were Erman G. 
Garlinger, William C. McCartney, Allen L. Behler, Clarence J. Yager, Victor 
Eckhardt, and Howard D. Poff.

Those from away who were in attendance at the funeral were L. E. Osmer, H. B. 
Hammerslag, L. W. Tinkham of Grand Rapids, A. M. Fuller, B. A. Stickle, Dr. O. 
H. Core, Mrs. L. J. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Hildinger, Lt. Jack Hildinger of 
Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Perkins and Mrs. Ernest Corey of Grand Ledge, Mr. 
and Mrs. Carl Niethamer and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Herney of Hastings, Mrs. 
Bettie Beaham and Don Eychaner of Ionia, Byron J. Hildinger of Ann Arbor and 
Arthur Todd of Vermontville and many others from nearby surrounding villages.
