Smith, wife of Ralph M. Smith, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Russell, of Orleans. Besides her husband and parents she leaves an only sister and three little ones to mourn her untimely death. Her funeral was attended at the Christian church on Tuesday by a large concourse of relatives and sympathizing friends. Sermon by E. Mudge, assisted in the service by Rev. W. Buel. Mrs. Smith was born in Grattan, Dec. 8th, 1852, and hence was nearly 28 years of age at the time of her death. Soon after her birth her parents settled in Otisco where they continued to reside until the subject of our sketch was 18 years of age, when they removed to Orleans where they now reside. When 19 years of age she made a public profession of religion and united with the M. E. Church, of which she remained a worthy and zealous member until her death. When 20 years of age she became the wife of Ralph M. Smith, and for 4 years she and her husband resided at Sheridan. Four years ago they settled in Belding, where she was loved and respected by all who knew her. About three weeks before her death she gave birth to two girls; she seemed to be getting along well until two weeks ago, when disease set in which continued to grow upon her until she died as stated above. On the night before her death she gave up all hope of recovery, and in a rational and composed state of mind gave directions as to the funeral, selecting the minister to conduct the service, and naming others to participate; selected singers, and named the 14th chapter of St. John as the one she desired read and the first two verses as the text for the sermon. She named her little twin girls Nettie and Nellie, commended them and her little boy to the care of her mother, and desired that her family should find a home with her parents. She appropriated some notions to various friends as keepsakes, and after having completed all these arrangements, she exhorted all to live faithful disciples of Christ and meet her beyond the storms of life. She then settled into a delirious and semi-conscious state which continued until her death on Sunday morning. The companion, parents, sister and other near friends of Mrs. Ralph Smith, deceased, desire to express their hearty thanks to the citizens of Belding and vicinity for the very active helpfulness manifested by them during the sickness that resulted in the death of one near and dear to them, also for the sympathy manifested them in their deep sorrow. They desire to express to the public their confidence in Dr. Goville and feel that he did all that he could do for the restoration of the one now dead.
