Smith, 70, will be mourned by many here whose recollections of him bear with them remembrances of their early days. Mr. Smith was for many years the most popular teacher of piano in this section of the state. There were few boys or girls in the city or vicinity who took piano lessons but were numbered among his pupils and many of the more advanced players were also studying under him. To all of those who fingered the keys under his direction he ever will remain dear in memory for his kindliness and inproverbial. He continued his musical labors here until failing health caused him and his wife to go to Hutchinson, Kans., where he died at the home of his cousin, Mrs. J. L. Clark. While in Ionia both Mr. and Mrs. Smith were loyal and energetic workers in the churches having their own affiliation with the Church of Christ. It is from that church funeral services were scheduled. He was preceded in death by Mrs. Smith who died near Gregory in 1927. The sole surviving relative of the immediate family is a brother, Frank, of Chicago.
