Mrs. Laban A. Smith Died Suddenly Saturday Morning. Hannah, relict of the late Laban A. Smith, died at her home in this village early Saturday morning, in the 69th year of her age, she having been born in Monroe county, N. Y., August 30, 1833. The immediate cause of her death was heart failure, accelerated by pneumonia of the lungs. Her death was rather sudden and unexpected, for she had been confined to the bed but two or three days and did not really give up her hold on life until a few hours before her death. She died surrounded by her children. Mrs. Smith, whose maiden name was Gillett, became the wife of Laban A. Smith, November 17, 1852. In 1857 the couple removed to a farm near Elkhart, Ind., going from there to a farm near White Pigeon, Mich., in 1865 and in 1866 settling off the farm north of town where they resided until a few years before Mr. Smith’s death in 1897. Mrs. Smith was an indulgent mother and a kind neighbor and friend. All her family of children, highly respected and among Portland’s best known citizens, reside in Portland and are Leonard, Benjamin, Harriet (wife of Charles A. Frost) William, Daniel and George. Funeral services over her remains were conducted from the Baptist church Tuesday afternoon by the pastor, assisted by Rev. Millard, who also performed the last sad rites for her husband.
