She was born Sept. 11, 1905, in Beal City, the daughter of Innocence and Catherine Schafer Esch. Upon leaving the farm, Eva came to Belding and worked at Belding Silk Mills. She later married Frank Smith of Mecosta and they made their home in Greenville, where they raised five children. Eva was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and the St. Charles Altar Society from the 1930s to the 1970s, a Gray Lady at United Memorial Hospital in the 1950s and 1960s and a volunteer for the Red Cross. In later years, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Belding. She is remembered as being a driver for the elderly, taking them to church, grocery shopping, to doctor visits or just to visit. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed. After Frank’s death in 1967, she married Clarence Rittersdorf in 1972. They lived in Belding until his death. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Russell, and her husband, Leonard; son, David; granddaughter, Renee; great-grandson, Cory; sisters, Alma and Evelyn; and brothers, Clem, Herm and Lenus. She is survived by her children, Dick Smith of Greenville, Cathie and Jim Nadeu of Coal, Francis Smith and friend Kathy, of Stanton; sister and brother-in-law, Emma and Harry Haydock of Detroit; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom in Mom and Dad’s younger years they loved to baby-sit for. We love you, Mom, and thanks again for being our mom. Mass of Christian burial is 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Belding, with Father Troy Nevins officiating. Interment is in St. Charles Catholic Cemetery, Greenville. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson- Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. A rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School or the American Red Cross, where Eva was a volunteer.
