L. Smoke First White Child Born In Odessa Eighty Three Years of Age, a Loyal Friend Passes Away. Always Brought Cheer. Many friends and acquaintances of Mr. A. L. Smoke have recently missed the cheery smile and happy expressions that made his usual visits welcome to the village for the past many years. Mr. Smoke has been in poor health for several years but only confined to the home permanently for a few months. His was one of the most congenial natures, even after disease had fastened its clamps upon him. He will be missed by many newer as well as many old time friends. His example of cheer is a legacy all may share. Obituary Amasa Lee Smoke was born in Odessa Township on July 4th, 1841 on the farm owned by Godfrey Hutchens and departed this life on July 13th, 1924. He was the first white child born in Odessa Township and has been a resident of Woodland and Odessa Townships all his life. In the year 1872 he was united in marriage to Sarah Fullington. To this union were born three daughters, Annie who passed away at the age of 5 years, Mrs. W. J. Webber of Los Angeles, California and Mrs. Cora Schaus of Detroit, Michigan. Also a stepdaughter, Mrs. Nettie Griebel of Lansing. The early part of his life was spent in Woodland but for the past 20 years he has resided in Odessa. During his residence in Odessa he has been a member of the Congregational church, where he was a faithful attendant until his affliction rendered him unable. He was a faithful husband and loving father and will be greatly missed by his wife and family and a host of friends. The funeral services were held at the family residence on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Rev. J. E. Cook spoke from Heb. 11-16 “But now they desire a better country, that is an Heavenly”.
