The Ionia Sentinel, January 7, 1963
Mrs. Matilda (Tillie) Mary Snell, 73, of 115 West Lincoln avenue died Sunday 
morning at St. Mary’s hospital in Grand Rapids where she had been a patient 
since December 13, 1962.

She was born July 2, 1889 in Patterson, N.J.  She came to Michigan in 1909 and 
was married to John E. VerPorter who died in May 1922.  To them were born 
William and Norbert of Ionia and John VerPorter, Jr., of Bellevue, also a son 
and daughter who preceded her in death.

In 1923 she was married to Milo O. Snell and he preceded her in death in 
1941.  Born to this union were Mrs. Margaret Harper of Ionia, Charles Snell of 
Portland; Mrs. Florence Selleck of Grand Rapids, and Edmund Snell of Ionia.

Mrs. Snell is also survived by 17 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a 
sister, Mrs. Margaret Grandquist of Bloomfield, N.J.

The body will lie in state at the residence of her son, Norbert, at 422 State 
Street until Wednesday at 11 a.m. when it will be removed to First Baptist 
church for service at 2 p.m.  Interment will be at North Plains cemetery.   
Arrangements are being made by Stone-Kauffman funeral home.
