The Portland Weekly Observer, Wednesday, May 4, 1887
John Snyder, living near the village of Palo, but in Bushnell township, 
Montcalm county, murdered his wife by cutting her head open with an axe while 
she was asleep in bed on Saturday night last.  He then cut his own throat and 
wandered through the woods to the house of a neighbor where he was captured.  
Snyder is insane and is now in jail at Stanton.
