She was born on June 10, 1924, in Detroit, Mich. to the late Louis D. and Margarete Guhse Bercin of Armada, Mich. She lived there until 1942 when she married Abram Payne Snyder of Pontiac, Mich. who preceded her in death. Their early married years were spent farming in Riley Center, Mich., after which Mr. Snyder’s career took them to Reed City, Ionia, Marquette and East Lansing, Mich., and Lahore, Pakistan. In 1970, Mr. Snyder joined the faculty at Penn State, where the couple spent their remaining years. Following Mr. Snyder’s retirement, they spent winters in Clearwater, Fla. She pursued her baccalaureate degree at Northern Michigan University and Michigan State University before graduating from Penn State in 1976. In her fifties, she entered the work force fulltime as an admissions counselor at Penn State. Throughout her life, she held many volunteer and leadership positions. She was a trustee of the Lahore American School, long-time member of the American Association of University Women and, in retirement, an active participant in the Centre County Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP). After her husband’s death in 1991, Mrs. Snyder maintained her State College residence and late last year moved into the assisted living facility, Pine Castle, at Brookline Village. She was an enthusiastic golfer and an avid bridge player. She belonged to several local bridge groups and thoroughly enjoyed their company. She gardened, hosted her large family and followed the accomplishments of grandchildren. She is survived by her six children, Bob Snyder and his wife, Sally, Hopkinton, Mass.; Mary Armstrong and her husband, Tom, Ann Arbor, Mich., Sarah Wiand and her husband, Burton, Clearwater, Fla.; Martha Taggart, Arlington, Va.; Patricia Johnson and her husband, Scott, Orleans, Mass., and John Snyder and his wife, Chrissy, Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa.; her 17 grandchildren; sisters Bette Singer, Seattle, Wash.; Margaret Spencer, Armada, Mich., and Avis Voorhees, Stewart, Fla.; and brothers Albert Bercin, Merritt Island, Fla.; and Richard Bercin, San Diego, Calif. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2007 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County, 780 Waupelani Dr. Extension, State College, PA 16801. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Centre County Meals-on-Wheels and Senior Meals Program, 205 S.
