June 29, 2017 BARBARA J. SOUSA Barbara J. Sousa of Ionia passed away after a short illness at the American House in Taylor, MI. She was born, Christine Mae Burk in Ypsilanti, MI and was adopted by Carl and Mildred Huttenlocker. She was raised in Jackson MI, and after graduating from Jackson High School in 1946, she attended Jackson Community College for a brief period of time. She and her family moved to Ionia in 1965 where she lived until moving to Taylor in 2014. In approximately 1967 Barbara was hired as the secretary of the Ionia County Mental Health Clinic and was considered t be the first full-time employee. She had such good rapport with people that she eventually became a case manager and social worker. Barbara was encouraged to complete her education, so, after ten years of classes she graduated from Michigan State University in 1987 with a degree in Psychiatric Social Work. She retired from the county in 1992 after 25 years of service. After retirement, she worked for Hospice as a social worker and then for the First Presbyterian Church as a receptionist. She had been a member of the Beta Signa Phi Sorority for over 50 years She was an active member and elder of the first Presbyterian Church of Ionia and a long-time member of the Ionia Literary Club. She was preceded in death by hr parents, Carl and Mildred and her daughter, Kim. She will be greatly missed by her sons, Doug of Ionia and Keith (Mary) of Taylor, MI; grandchildren, Chad (Ginny) Sousa, Karen (Mike) Richardson, Katelyn Woodson, Kerri Woodson; and eight great-grandchildren, Logan Megan, Ryan, Willow, Hayden Lily, Ethan, and Calvin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many life-time friends. A Memorial service honoring Barbara will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ionia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Church. Interment will follow at Balcom Cemetery. For those desiring, contributions may be made to Ionia Area Hospice in memory of Barbara. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes.
