March 20, 1947 J. W. SOUTHWELL VICTIM OF HEART ATTACK AT HOME Well Known Portland Business man Expires Suddenly Tuesday James W. Southwell, 55, one of Portland's best known businessmen, died suddenly at his home on Brush street shortly before 6:00 p.m. Tuesday. The family had just returned from Chicago, where a son, James M., and Miss Florence Mulerone were married the day previous. Funeral services will be held at Banfield funeral home on Friday afternoon, 2:30 and burial will be in Portland cemetery. Bearers will be the sons and two sons-in-law, Jack Kreger and Tim Snyder, and a nephew, Philip Hughes. Rev. Fred Williams, of Baroda, Mich., a former pastor of Portland Congregational church, will officiate, and will be assisted by Rev. Benjamin I. Davies, present pastor of the church. Mr. Southwell was born in Chicago, but had lived in Portland many years. On August 19, 1911, he married Miss Mable Hughes of Portland, who survives. For some time the couple lived on a farm in Danby, and then Mr. Southwell became associated with the Ford agency here. In 1926 he opened Southwell's Service in the Peake building opposite Hotel Divine. Three years later the business had grown to such an extent that the quarters were outgrown and the present site of the business on Maple street was purchased and remodeled for garage purposes. In May, 1942, Mr. Southwell was stricken with a heart attack and was confined to his bed for some time. Shortly thereafter he closed the business due to lack of help and did not reopen until close of the war, when his sons James M. and Langdon returned from service and joined their father in operation of the business, which includes the local dealership for Dodge and Plymouth lines. Mr. Southwell was a member ot the Congregations church in which he was an active worker; a charter member of the Lions club, member of the board of Commerce and secretary-treasurer of the Ionia Hereford Breeders association. He was a man of great energy and the efforts which he put forth in his business and in other activities always produced success. There are also six surviving children, Mrs. John Kreger, Flat Rock; Hughes G. Southwell, Dayton, O.; Mrs. T. R. Snyder, Lansing; James M., Portland, and Janet, of Chicago, who are twins and Langdon Southwell of Portland. There are also 10 grandchildren.
