At the age of 21 he came to Ionia county, Michigan, living with a brother until his marriage April 6, 1864, to Adelia Crippen of North Plains, where he lived until 1874, when he moved to Orleans, where he has since made his home. Twenty-two years ago he was stricken with the disease which has since cut him off from the active life to which he was accustomed, but after the first few years his usually cheerful disposition asserted itself and happy in the companionship of his devoted family and many friends. Taking great interest in books and papers he enjoyed life to the fullest extent. After a few days’ illness he passed away Feb. 12, 1918, the last of a family of eight children, leaving besides the wife, three children, Ella, Mrs. Chas. Lambertson of Belding; Alice, Mrs. Richard Mares of Wheatland, N.D., and Jerry Spaulding of Orleans, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held at the residence Saturday, at 1 o’clock, services being conducted by Rev. Birdsall of the M.E. church of Orleans, who spoke comforting words to the family and paid the highest tribute to the character, integrity and good citizenship of this Michigan pioneer. The bearers were Al Sherwood, Chas. Graff, Frank Hale, John Took, Gus Flanagan and Ed Olmstead, and beneath many beautiful flowers he was laid to rest in Orleans cemetery.
