The services were in charge of the Pewamo Lodge F. & A.M., of which the deceased had been a loyal member of for a number of years. The funeral sermon was read by Rev. George Brown of the M.E. church, interment being made in the Lyons cemetery. John Fremont Spaulding, son of David and Elizabeth Spaulding, was born in Onondaga county, N.Y., October 25th, 1853, and passed from this earthly life on Wednesday, December 12th, 1917, in the 64th year of his age. At the age of 18 years he came with his parents to Ionia county and has been a resident here since that time. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. Watters on May 21st, 1877. To this union were given them five children, Ney, of Muir; John, living on a farm adjoining the old homestead; Mrs. Lavalette O’Neil, of Lyons; and Perry and Charles, who live on the farm home, who, together with the wife and mother, are left to mourn his departure to another world. He also leaves a brother, Henry Spaulding of Perrington, who was present at the last sad rites performed for the deceased. We have known Mr. Spaulding from the time of our earliest recollections, and we have always been proud to claim him as a friend. We knew him to be a kind and loving husband and father, and a citizen whose loyalty has never been questioned. Coming here a young man he grew to manhood and then to evening years, respected by everybody who knew him, and loved for the tender consideration he always had for others. He has gone from out this life into that beautiful mystery of the eternal existence that lies beyond. He leaves behind him the memory of years well spent – of the duties of life well performed. May his be the reward that has been promised unto the faithful.
