June 3, 1932 Many out-of-town friends of Arthur H. Speckin were here Thursday afternoon to attend his funeral services held at the home of an uncle, Edward Schaffer, 614 North Jackson Street, and conducted by Rev. Wiese, of the Lutheran church of Big Rapids. Mr. Speckin was a native Ionian, and born here while his late father, Rev. Henry Speckin, who died March 27, 1916, was city treasurer. He was found dead Tuesday morning just outside of his room by the side of his automobile from the bullet from his revolver. According to Leonard Speckin, a brother, of Saginaw, who is employed by the Pere Marquette railroad, the two had spent a happy holiday at Leland, where they had formerly lived. Arthur had never seemed to be looking forward more to a season of pleasure than he had during this week-end trip. He discussed freely his hopes for the summer vacation, and the last words spoken by the brothers as they had parted at Big Rapids after the vacation was from Arthur, who spoke of meeting the brother this weekend at Horsehead Lake. Leonard Speckin further states that the matter has been thoroughly investigated, and no motive can be found that would cause the brother to take his own life. He says that it must have been accidental. Experts who examined the gun say that it was of a type that could be easily discharged. He also says that officers making the investigation found a slight scratch on the car that could have been made by the gun dropped from Arthur’s hand. It is thought that Arthur died at 2:30 but this is not definitely known. His body was found about 8 o’clock in the morning. The lights of the car were still burning. His bag had been removed from the rumble seat and stood by the side of the car. The brother has checked every clue that might have led to the first theory that Arthur died of self-inflicted but feels that this is not true. Two sides of the room where the casket stood were banked with flowers. Those were in charge of Una Mae Ingersoll and Ina Mae Hale, of Big Rapids. The bearers were August R. Pascoe, of the Lansing department of pardons and paroles, and Leo D. King, Wesley R. Jones, John J. Laing, Lawrence Strackable, and A. VanCampen of the identification department at Lansing where Arthur was employed. Interment was in Highland Park Cemetery.
