SPECKIN Beloved Divine Now Sleeps With His Aged Parents Gone Before. The funeral service for Rev. Henry F. Speckin, attended at St. John's Lutheran church this afternoon called forth a very large concourse of friends, and seldom has there been a funeral in Ionia where the sorrow was more sincere. He was a man of many estimable traits of character, and was admired and beloved by those who knew him most intimately. The death angel laid heavy toll on the community when he dipped his quill into the life blood of Henry F. Speckin. H.F. Speckin was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Speckin, who came to America from Germany with their son Henry, when he was six years of age. They located in Ionia and the son grew to manhood here. He attended the Ionia school until 13 years of age, and then was in Concordia college at Ft. Wayne, Ind., for six years. From there he went to St. Louis (Mo) Theological college for three years, and after graduating with honors accepted his first call at Cheboygan, Mich., to the ministry in the German Lutheran church synod. From Cheboygan he went to Leeland, Mich., where he met and married Miss Clara Steffens, and after a creditable pastorate there he was called to Fredoina, Pa., and thence to Sharpsburg, near Pittsburg. It was at the latter place that Mr. Speckin was first taken ill, a hip affliction putting him in such condition that he returned to Ionia for four years to reside, pending treatment and recuperation, and during which time he served the city three years as collector. His health improved while he was here to such an extent that he hoped for permanent recovery, and three years ago he again entered the field of duty to his church, accepting a call at West Falls, N.Y. On January 24th last he went from Town of Boston, Erie county, New York, to Buffalo, some twenty miles distant, for surgical operation, and on January 23rd to Johns Hopkins University hospital at Baltimore, for randium treatment, returning home only a few days before his death, which was on Monday morning, March 20th at 2:00 o'clock. The funeral service, at the church where he received his early religious instruction, and whose pulpit he had often graced with his splendid fervor, was a solemn one. The tribute paid by Rev. B.H. Succop, and his assistants, were in every way merited and well-bestowed. The sermon at the house was by Rev. H.R. Succop, the sermon in German at the church was by Rev. Karl Kichter, of Sanborn, N.Y., a friend from his boyhood, and the sermon in English was by Rev. C. Poch of Grand Rapids, a student classmate in college. The carriers at the funeral were six nephews, R.A. Redemsky, Wm. Redemsky, Fred Redemsky, Charles Schnell, of Ionia, Fred J. Speckin of Lansing, and Clarence Steffens of Leeland.
