Loyal Christian. Samuel Speicher was born in Somerset Co. Penn, April 16, 1842. He grew to manhood in his native state, and married Elizabeth Blough. Soon after their marriage they moved to Elkhart Co., Ind. where they lived about three years, then moved on a new farm in the eastern part of Bowne township, Kent Co. After seven years of hard work improving this farm, they sold it and bought another eighty of timbered land in the southeastern part of Campbell township, Ionia Co., where they moved about March 1, 1876. There were only about two acres cleared on this place when they moved on it, a small frame house unfinished, and a small log barn or stable. After a few years they were able to build a nice basement barn, which unfortunately was destroyed by fire in the fall fo 1899, making the additional hard work and expense of replacing it. In 1909 they moved to Lake Odessa, whee in February 1912, Mrs.Speicher was called away by death. After wife's death he divided his time between Lake Odessa and his farm where his son lives. About two years ago he had a severe attack of the trouble which finally caused his death and from which he only partially recovered, but was able to be about, to make trips to town, call on friends and attend church most o the time until about six weeks ago he was confined to his bed suffering intense pain much of the time until the afternoon of Wednesday Dec.4, when death came to his relief. He leaves a daughter, Mrs.David R.Mote of Beaverton, Mich., a son, William on the home farm, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, besides a large circle of other relative and friends. His age was 76 years, 7 months and 18 days. Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday, Dec.8, by the local minister of the Church of the Brethren of which both Brother Speicher and his wife were members for many years.
