She attended the Lowell high school, where she was counted one of its most brilliant pupils. She was converted at the age of 8 years and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at McBrides. She took her membership to Lowell, and during her life there was one of the faithful, efficient workers, being one of the teachers in the primary department of the Sunday school and an earnest worker in the Epworth League. In Sept., 1893, she was united in marriage to Edward H. Spencer. To this union have been born seven children: Marion, Evelyn, Harriett, Edna, Florence, Winnifred and Edward, Jr., all of whom are left to mourn their loss with the exception of Baby Harriett who died in Sept., 1899, at the age of 7 weeks. Words cannot express her devotion as a daughter, sister, wife and mother. She looked well to the ways of her household and ate not the bread of idleness. For a number of years she has suffered great physical pain, but was always cheerful and ever looked on the sunny side of life, and she never was too busy or too weary to lend a helping hand to those in need. Her death is the first break in her immediate family circle, her aged father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Painter of Lowell, two sisters, Mrs. G.H. Cheetham of Lake Odessa and Mrs. C.E. Donaker of Lowell, and her only aunt, Mrs. H.S. Hunter of Lake Odessa, being the remaining members. These with her stricken husband, her five daughters and infant son are left to mourn her early departure. But not without hope - for her trust was in her Savior. Since residing in Ionia she took her church membership from Lowell and joined the M.E. church here, and was a helper in the West End Aid society, and the daughters are all members of the Sunday school. A host of sorrowing relatives and friends attest the brightness and helpfulness of the life just gone.
