The Ionia County News, Thursday, December 23, 1948

Mrs. Edith Spencer died in Ionia County Memorial Hospital early Saturday 
morning, December 18, after two days serious illness.  She was 71 years old.  
Although she had been failing in health for the past three years, her illness 
was not considered critical until Wednesday night when she was removed from 
her home, 138 Lafayette St., to the hospital.

Edith Voyzey, daughter of James and Sarah Voyzey, was born April 5, 1877 in 
Easton township.  She was married to Fred Way of Ionia in 1900.  Mr. Way died 
in 1912 and four years later, in 1916, she was married to Edward Spencer of 
Ionia.  Mr. Spencer died in 1935.

She is survived by two brothers, Dr. George Voyzey of Kalamazoo and Walter 
Voyzey of Lowell.  Rev. Howard Smith of the First Methodist Church officiated 
at the funeral service, held Monday afternoon from the church. Burial was in 
the family lot at Oak Hill Cemetery.  Bearers were Harry Lyle, Blaine Laden, 
Gordon Lehman, Chan Haight, Sr., John Toutenhoofd and Roy Weber.  Flowers were 
in charge of Mrs. Louella Coe, Mrs. Gordon Lehman and Miss Celia Kennedy.

Mrs. Spencer was a member of the Ionia Methodist Church, the W.C.S.C. and the 
Janetta Howard class, and a life member of Queen Esther Chapter O.E.S.  She 
served as treasurer of the Chapter for many years.

Loyal to her friends and any cause in which she believed, her friends were 
many.  She was, in the words of a writer whose works she liked, “Just plain 
folks” and went out of her way to do a neighborly act and just to be kind and 
she never failed to be kind, understanding and helpful when these qualities 
were needed.
