Nov. 22, 1916 F.L. SPENCER AT REST OLD CITIZEN HAS PASSED AWAY The funeral of Fred L. Spencer was held Sunday at two p.m. at the Baptist church, preceded by a brief prayer service at the residence. Rev. W.A. Biss spoke at these services and the Rev. E.E. Branch of Ionia spoke the last solemn words as he was laid to rest in Highland Park cemetery. The bearers were; E.L. Kendall, E.M. Parney, W.H. Wilson, W.A. Wilder, L.L. Hubbell and W.P. Hetherington, Mrs. Luther Berry and Clayton Knapp sang “Abide With Me,: and “Crossing the Bar.” The floral gifts were many and beautiful mute tributes of esteem to one whom none knew but to respect and honor. Mr. Spencer was born April 12, 1938 in Jackson county, Mich. When twelve years of age he came to Ada, Kent county, and the remainder of his life was spent in the counties of Kent, Montcalm and Ionia. Much of his early business life was spent in Greenville, where he served as member of the school board, as supervisor and as mayor. On January 1, 1862, he was married at Spencer’s Mill to Miss Judith Sutton. To them were born two daughters- Mrs. Chas. Ireland of Ionia and Miss Mabel Spencer of Grand Rapids. Mr. Spencer was the owner of the water power at Smyrna from which was developed the Spencer Electric Light Co., and of which he has been president from its beginning. Since 1893 his home has been in Belding, serving as supervisor for a number of years. His death occurred November 18, 1916, after a brief illness although he had been in failing health for some time. Sr. Spencer had been a member of the Baptist church for forty0six years, uniting with that body when at Greenville. In the Belding church he was a valued member of the official board. In his years of fine prosperity and in his business reverses he was never lacking in the breadth of his charity, but always true to his allegiances as a Christian and faithful to the principles of truth and justice. As a neighbor, as a husband and father his kindness will never be forgotten. A good man has gone from us and To whom turn we bur to the ineffable Name? Builder and maker thou of houses not made with hands! What, have fear of change from thee who art ever the same? Doubt that thy power can fill the heart that thy power expands? There shall never be one lost good! What was shall live as before; The evil is null, is naught, is silence implying sound; What was good, shall be good, with for evil so much good more; On the earth the broken arch; in the heaven, a perfect round.
