Jan. 29, 1931 Funeral services for Mrs. James Spencer, Ionia county pioneer, will be held Friday afternoon at the home in Orleans at 1:30 o’clock and from the Fitzjohn funeral home in Belding at 2 o’clock. Mrs. Spencer died at her home Monday evening at 8 o’clock following an illness of anaemia and heart trouble of a year’s duration. Last week her condition had been thought to show improvement and Monday she felt unusually well. She was up and around all day and was talking with Mr. Spencer just before her death. Suddenly she exclaimed, “O, dear,” and collapsed, her death following almost instantly. Mrs. Spencer was before her marriage, Miss Trudy Cowles and was born in Keene township 70 years ago next April. She was married to James Spencer in 1888. Following their marriage they resided in Boston township for some years, later going to Smyrna and about 10 years ago to Orleans, where they resided just north of the Pere Marquette railroad crossing on the west side of the road. Surviving her are her husband and three brothers, Bela Cowles, of Orleans; William of Smyrna, and Carl, of Belding.
