Spencer, which occurred at the family residence at about half past 12 o’clock, last night. Pain for the friends to whom the parting will bring sorrow, particularly the husband thus left lonely in life’s evening, but gladness that she has found relief, and rest from the terrible suffering she has been compelled to endure for months past. Her disease was rheumatism which finally went to the brain and caused her death. She was a woman of strong constitution and physique, battling with death up to the last with the heroism of a martyr, but she was vanquished at last. She was 69 years of age. The funeral services be held from the home, Saturday morning at 10 o’clock, the burial taking place in the Riverside cemetery. ------------ Mrs. Mary E. Spencer, nee Waldron, was born in Herkimer Co., New York, May 18th, 1828, and died at her home in Belding, March 5th. She was one of a family of nine children, of whom there now remains alive only three, Mr. H.S. Waldron of this city and two brothers residing in Lansing. A very uncommon thing in connection with her family history was that her parents lived to fifty-two years of married life, and successfully raised a family of nine children before death entered their family circle, the aged father being the first one to be called. She was married to William Spencer in December, 1848, and with him went to Chicago in 1850, where they remained several years. They then lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., for some time, after which they came to Michigan and took the old farm where her parents had settled some 40 years previous, which is located about six miles northwest of Belding. About eight years ago Mr. Spencer purchased their present beautiful home since which time they have been residents of this city. Her last sickness has been long and painful. Every effort that kind and loving friends, as well as the best medical skill could forth was exercised in her behalf to stay the hand of the death angel but to no avail. The funeral services were held from the residence Saturday morning, the house being well filled with the neighbors and friends gathered in sorrow to pay her the last tribute of respect. The services were conducted by Rev. B.V. Child, and the remains were tenderly laid at rest in the Riverside cemetery.
