               J. CLYDE SPENCER TAKEN BY DEATH HERE TUESDAY 
           Long A Prominent Figure In Civic And Business Affairs

Ionia lost a prominent and beloved citizen Tuesday when death came at 7:00 a.m. 
to J. Clyde Spencer, 53, secretary of the local Chamber of Commerce.

Cause of death was given as a heart ailment with which he had been afflicted 
for several years and which had caused him to be hospitalized for several weeks 
this past fall.

Besides his work as Secretary of the Ionia Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Spencer was 
also secretary of M-66 Highway Improvement Association, a past president of the 
Ionia Country Club, a Lions Club member, and was a former member of the Ionia 
City District School Board, which he served as secretary for 15 years. 

Mr. Spencer, a graduate of the Lowell High School, operated a gasoline station 
and later a general store in Ionia before his present position.

He was married on July 15, 1927, to June Wales, of Battle Creek, who survives 
him. He also leaves a son, Lieut. J. Clyde Spencer Jr., who is attached to a 
Medical Corps unit at Fort Smith, Arkansas, and a brother, Orville, a Belding 
merchant. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 9, at the First 
Methodist Church, Ionia. 

Pallbearers will be Ray Owen, Gerald Stebbins, Fred Kidd Jr., Wilson Dalzell, 
Murl Hiler and Dr. Chandler Haight.

Interment will be in Highland Park Mausoleum.
