Spencer, aged 24 years and 5 months. The funeral services were held at the Congregational church in this place, last Sunday, Rev. D. P. Breed officiating, assisted by the Revs. I. N. Carman and James Hamilton, of Lansing, and under the auspices of the A.O.U.W. of which organization he was a member. We clip the following from the Pewamo Plaindealer in reference to the deceased: “The deceased came to Michigan from Massachusetts in 1879. During a residence of several years in Portland, this county, he was an earnest worker in the Congregational church. In the fall of 1883 he removed to Mt. Pleasant and took charge of a large boot and shoe store in that village; but ill health made it impossible for him to further discharge the duties of his position, and he went to Granite Falls, Minnesota, in the hope of improving his physical condition. Getting no relief there, he returned to Michigan and lived with his brother, in this village until that terrible disease, consumption, took him into that invisible and unknown world, for which he had been patiently waiting so long. From a personal acquaintance with the deceased for several years we know him to have been a noble, whole souled person with manly principles and an unselfish and undying devotion to his relatives and friends. Besides all this he was fast developing a large ambition which had Providence not ruled otherwise must have surely yielded future fruits. Sad that a young life should be plucked on the very morning of its blooming! Sad indeed that his hopes – his aspirations – his all – should be so ruthlessly torn from him; but who knows that in the fairer and brighter land he will not reap that Heavenly reward one hundred fold; greater than any earthly blessing?” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/s/spencer3431nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
