Spencer slipped as he was carr(y)ing a pail at his home on Lafayette street, falling across the pail. He suffered severely from the injury and Dr. Logan was called. Instead of improving he continued to grow worse and on Thursday evening Dr. Grant was called in consultation. It was evident that internal injury had been inflicted by the accident and that he was past relief. After suffering intensely he died at about 9:30 Friday morning. The funeral was attended from the M. E. church Monday afternoon. Among the relatives from abroad who attended were his mother, Mrs. A. M. Spencer of South Lyon, his brothers, J. A. Spencer of Minneapolis and Wm. E. Spencer of Smyrna, his sister Mrs. J. A. Crawford, of Coral, and Mr. Crawford, his father-in-law J. M. Kidd of Kiddville, and his brother-in-law, I. N. Just of South Lyon. The black cloth casket bore upon its top a large bouquet of calla lilies and was borne by L. B. Soule, W. B. Wells, A. E. Tower and F. C. Sibley. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. M. Gould, assisted by Rev. W. H. Scott. The hymns were feelingly sung by Mrs. G. K. Jackson, Mrs. M. H. Amphlett, Miss Kate Benedict, Miss Lillie Remington, and Messrs. J. E. Just and J. Lee Fowle, Eugene Smith presiding at the organ. The attendance was quite large, including several members of the bar. The interment was at Highland Park." Third article, on page 6: "Benjamin Franklin Spencer was born in Lima, (Livingston Co) N. Y., May 25, 1838. At the opening of the war he was in the law office of Scott Lord, of Geneseo, N.Y., afterward member of congress from that state. He enlisted in the One Hundred and Fourth New York volunteers, for which he raised two companies, and served for two years, earning the rank of captain. He was discharged for disabilities, and soon after his recovery he came to Ionia and formed a partnership with W. B. Wells, the firm being Wells & Spencer. In March, 1865, he became associated in practice with A. B. Morse, now Justice Morse of the supreme court. This partnership continued until 1871. During this time he was twice elected circuit commissioner. Spencer & Morse did a large pension and bounty business and gradually worked into a large law practice. After the dissolution of the firm, Mr. Spencer was successively associated in practice with L. B. Soule and J. C. Blanchard. For several years he was a justice of the peace and did a large part of the business of that office here. In July, 1864, Mr. Spencer married Miss Sarah J. Kidd, who, with two sons, Harry E. and James C. and three daughters, Kate, Florence and Jennie, are the surviving members of his family." Fourth article, reporting resolution passed by Circuit Court to pay tribute to B. F. Spencer.
