Spencer, who served as a private in Co. D., 98th Regiment of New York Volunteers from December 28, 1863 to August 31, 1865, died at 11:30 Sunday evening at his home on Pleasant street, having been unconscious for more than a week. His affliction was a complication of heart, nerve and brain trouble. Members of the John Megarah Post, G.A.R., in which society Mr. Spencer had been active since coming to Portland, together with members of the ladies’ patriotic societies of the village, attended the funeral services in a body at the late home Wednesday afternoon. Rev. W. W. Slee of the M. E. church officiated. Wallace K. Spencer was born at Malone, N.Y., June 1, 1840. After leaving his native state he located in Ohio, where he married Mrs. Christiana VanGilder, whose death occurred 33 years ago. Thirty years ago he came to Portland. He was a carpenter by trade, and followed this occupation steadily until his health prevented. Thirteen years ago he married Mrs. Sarah Phillips of this place, who, with two sisters, Mrs. Ada VanBuren and Mrs. Roletta Gibson, of Lansing, survive.
