M. Spicer Dead Grand Good Woman Passed to Eternal Rest Last Friday at Ripe Old Age. Mrs. Ann Minerva Spicer died at her home in Cook’s Corners, Friday, Oct. 27., aged 82 years. Born in Pittstown, N. Y., she came to Michigan in 1844 and with her husband, Charles Spicer, settled on the farm now occupied by her grandson Claude Spicer in Otisco, a few miles west of Belding. Mr. Spicer died in 1858 leaving the cares of home and farm life to her and the older children. About thirty years ago she moved from the farm to Cook’s Corners where she has lived a peaceful, Christian character and a grand woman whom all who knew her loved and respected. The following beautiful tribute to her memory is given by Mrs. M. A. Lessiter, “dear, good Grandma Spicer now sweetly sleeps by the side of her youth’s chosen life companion, long passed on before, but we believe reunited now, in the glorious world. Grandma did very much to make this world glorious, no one ever needed the tangible things of this life, or sympathy in trouble that went from her door unaided. At an early day herself and husband settled on the line of Grattan and Otisco, he being first buried at Ashley then removed to Otisco cemetery. How often we have styled her the good Samaritan of modern times and her name being Minerva, we almost revered her labors of love, placing her as a modern Goddess that more than equaled the ancient Minerva. Her eighty-two years were well spent, her neighbors testify to that. Her memory will long be like her lovely garden, fragrant with sweet examples.” She leaves two sons, Allen Spicer of Grattan and W. C. Spicer of this city, her two daughters, Mrs. Geo. Snyder and Mrs. Stockholm having preceded her to the eternal home. The funeral was held at her late residence Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Secord officiating and Mrs. Decker Hoppough sang. Many old residents and neighbors were present to pay their last respects to the memory of the deceased.
