Spitzley, of Ionia, age 90, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2009. She was born on Aug. 27, 1918 in Portland, Mich. the daughter of Roy and Bessie (Grenier) Shepherd. She attended St. Patrick Catholic School before moving to Ionia in 1926 where she attended Ss. Peter and Paul Academy from which she graduated with the class of 1936. She married William "Jim" Spitzley of Westphalia on Oct. 21, 1939 and lived in rural Westphalia on the Spitzley homestead the first five years of her married life. They then moved to a farm north of Ionia in Ronald Township where they resided for 44 years before moving to Easton Township. She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Altar Rosary Society, the St. Catherine Circle and Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. She was a volunteer worker for her church and the Commission on Aging for many years. She is survived by two sons, Dennis (Delores) Spitzley of Ionia and Lawrence (Pamela) Spitzley of Fenwick; four daughters, Susan Hogan of Centerville, Ohio, Patricia (Thomas) Reinhardt of Ionia, Phyllis (Danny) Richardson of Grand Rapids and Mary Hogle; special friend Kevin Walsh of Grand Rapids; special friend, Nancy O'Brien of Mt. Pleasant; 22 wonderful grandchildren; 37 precious great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; many step- grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; special niece, Elizabeth Slowinski Currie and nephew Joseph Slowinski and their families, plus many other nieces and nephews and sisters-in-law, Lucille Shepherd of Kalkaska and Estelle Schafer of Lansing. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years in June of 1995, son Francis Spitzley in 2004, son-in-law Tom Pancza in 1997, grandson-in-law Tim Ackerson in 1995, her parents, four brothers, Daniel, James, George and Joseph and sister, Alice. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Melvin Fox, Pastor at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Rite of Committal following at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ss. Peter and Paul Scholarship Fund, the Ionia County Commission on Aging, or to the American Heart Association, in memory of Mrs. Katherine E. Spitzley.
