Mrs. Melissa Sprague, wife of the late Silas Sprague, died about 11 o’clock Saturday night, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eugene Cogswell. Mrs. Sprague had been in usual health of late, making no complaint beyond the infirmities incident to advanced years. She took tea at the table of her daughter, Mrs. C. L. Bemis, Saturday evening, and nothing was observable to indicate that she was not in usual health. But about 8, after her return to Mrs. Cogswell’s, it was suddenly noticed that she seemed to be suffering from some obstruction in throat, and she did not respond when spoken to. She was laid on the couch, and never recovered consciousness. Dr. Allen was called and pronounced it a case of apoplexy. Melissa Vinton was born in Oneida county, N. Y., Sept. 8, 1823. When quite young her parents moved to Ohio. She was first married in Ravenna, Ohio, when about 20 years old, to Harvey Huggins, who died two or three years after. One son, born to this union, died when 14 years old. The young widow went to Canada to visit friends for a time, and then came to Keene in this county, to live with an aunt. In that town she was married to Silas Sprague, Nov. 23, 1846. Soon after this marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Sprague took possession of the homestead farm in Easton, where their entire married life was passed. Four children were born to them: Jerome W., now living in California; Mary, wife of Eugene Cogswell, of this city; Melvin, of Easton; and Sarah, wife of Chas. L. Bemis of this city. There well be a short service of prayer at the home of Mr. Cogswell, on Harter street, at 8:25 tomorrow morning. Services at Easton church, at 10 a.m. Interment in Easton cemetery.
